TIPS FOR TUESDAY: Gluten Sensitivity Self-Test & Diet Plan

Wow - as many as 20 million Americans could be affected by a gluten sensitivity and not even know it.  This fact led me to finding a great segment by Dr. Oz on Gluten Sensitivity and a way to find out if you might be experiencing a gluten sensitivity with this simple checklist.  Count all the symptoms that you experience on a regular, chronic basis.

How many of the following do you have? Check all that apply.

Digestive Symptoms
  • Frequent bloating or gas
  • Diagnosed with IBS or acid reflux
  • Daily diarrhea or chronic constipation

Neurologic & Skeletal Symptoms
  • Migraine or headaches
  • Joint pains or aches
  • Brain fog
Hormonal & Immune Symptoms
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Ongoing fatigue
  • Chronic eczema or acne
Results
Four or more symptoms indicate that gluten may be impacting your health. But even one symptom, if severe and chronic, can be a sign of a gluten sensitivity. You may want to consult your doctor or try going gluten-free for 2-4 weeks.

Based on my own results, I am definitely gluten intolerant and have known this about myself for a while.  Because of this, eating clean and getting my nutrition under control has been a HIGH priority for me.

Dr. Oz recommends this diet plan, if you're interested in trying this - I'd recommend doing it for 7 days to see how you feel and if you see any changes.

STATurday - My Journey with PiYo and Shakeology

Well, it is now week 4 since I began PiYo!  This past week has been a challenge for me - as the office was stressful and I found myself breaking back into old habits to cope.  In other words, while I was still exercising every morning, I wasn't eating very well at during the week.  As a result, I knew that when I got on the scale and measured myself this weekend that I would not expect much of a result.  And sure enough, no change, not even a budge. Not even an inch.

Now, I will NOT let this get me discouraged, as all changes must take place in small ways over a long period of time.  Most people give up when they don't see instant results - but I know what I did wrong last week and this week I'll focus on being better.  It's all about your mindset and PLANNING.

So this next upcoming week, I am going to be doing a mixture of PiYo and T25 moving forward.  I have a fun group of girls that are in my T25 Challenge group starting on Monday and I think that the PiYo stretching and training will really help keep my muscles from getting too stiff.  I will try this out this week and see what happens.  WISH ME LUCK!  :)

Another thing that I am going to focus on this week is TRACKING my food - I mean EVERYTHING.  I have MyFitnessPal.com - so I plan on using it this week to hold myself more accountable.  Last week I didn't do a good job of prepping all of my meals throughout the day - which gave me the mental excuse to eat a candy bar here or there, throughout the day at work.

I think that with all of the above focuses this week, next week is going to be a BIG number and I will feel 100% better.  Stay tuned for my results next STATurday!

Cheers to a healthy happy pure life - it's all a journey... and it won't take 24 hours to change 28 years of old habits... little steps each day will add up in BIG ways over a long period of time.  So, if you're listening out there and you're like me... don't give up!  Let's do this together.  If I can do it, YOU can do it.

SWEAT SHOT!!!!! :)

Create NEW Habits!

Creating NEW Habits...

We have all tried this and we have all failed before.

I want to share with you how I think you can do it and stick to it! What works for science and physics also holds true to building habits. When you’re new to making positive changes that last and stick, our bodies will fight us for a number of weeks because we’re forcing it to do new things.

HOWEVER…If you can rack up a few small victories along the way, especially in the beginning, it becomes infinitely easier to CONTINUE having small victories.

Remove emotion from the equation – automate your habit as much as possible so you don’t even have to think about it. Here are some examples:

Example: If your goal is to get up and workout in the morning, then go to sleep with your workout stuff at the foot of your bed. If that’s not enough, sleep in your workout clothes. As soon as you wake up, before you have time to think about sleeping in, push yourself out of bed. Struggle getting out of bed? Put your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you HAVE to get out of bed to turn it off.  I had to do this initially!

Example: If your goal is to eat healthy every day, don’t give yourself an option of not eating healthy – throw out the junk food in your house and start preparing meals the night before. Better yet, do your weekly meal planning on the weekends when you have a little more time for planning and grocery shopping.

If you tend to let emotion get in the way, automate your habit-changing process as much as possible. That way, you won’t have to ask, “should I skip this or should I not” or “should I eat this or should I not?” you just DO things because that’s what you’re doing.

What if excuses were no longer an option? What if you decided right now that you are no longer allowed to use excuses? Suddenly, your decision to do or not do something just got a WHOLE lot easier. No isn't an option…so you might as well do it.

Maybe you don’t have that kind of iron will, and you need help. Accountability is KEY. With the challenge groups I do monthly, I have already set up that accountability factor for you, so do use it.  However, if you haven't joined one of my groups, you can always get an accountability partner - find a friend or family member that you trust to hold you accountable towards your goals!  Or better yet, sign up to have me as your FREE coach and join my team!  :)

Here are some suggestions for the steps to making NEW habits work (these habits apply to everything, not just exercise or nutrition...)

•Start small - pick ONE habit that’s easily completed.  Do it every day.
•Build momentum - as you get good at completing that small task, slowly expand and build momentum with your victories.
•Automate - remove emotion from the equation! The less steps between you and desired habit the more likely you’ll be to finish.
•Remain accountable – do what you need to do to keep yourself accountable through the first few weeks. Make the pain of skipping your habit more painful than actually spending the 5-15 minutes doing it!

RECIPE WEDNESDAY: Slow Cooker Fiesta Chicken Recipe

Folks, I found another yummy SLOW COOKER recipe!  Yipppeee!!

I made this last night and as you know, I love super easy meals!  This was really full of flavor and delicious.  It also goes well if you're sticking to eating clean and if you're working the #21DayFix program.

It's called the Fiesta Chicken Recipe!

Serve shredded chicken slow cooked with tomatoes, corn and black beans over brown rice. Make it a fiesta of flavors by adding toppings such as shredded cheese (light /non-fat and within reason folks!), sour cream (small portion), chopped cilantro or green onions.

Ingredients

Serves:

Directions

  1. - Place chicken in slow cooker.
  2. - Mix Seasoning Mix, tomatoes, corn and beans until blended. Pour over chicken. Cover.
  3. - Cook 8 hours on LOW or 4 hours on HIGH. Remove chicken from slow cooker.
  4. - Shred chicken, using 2 forks. Return chicken to slow cooker; mix well. Serve over cooked brown rice with assorted toppings, if desired.

Let me know what you think after you make it!

STATurday: My Journey with 21 Day Fix and Shakeology

I hope you don't mind me getting real here.  But, as I sit here writing this today I have come to the realization that this truly is a journey.  It is constant work and I am amazed at how far I've come and how much farther I can really go.

What is a journey anyway?  According to the dictionary it is an "act of traveling from one place to another".  So that then leads me to my next question which is, what am I traveling to?  What do I want?

I want to live a healthy and happy life as well as be happy with my body and my weight.  I want to feel comfortable in my clothes.  I want to teach and help others on their own fitness journey.  That is what I still want and what I keep striving to achieve.

I have been doing the Beachbody programs since January 2014 and I've seen some amazing transformations within myself and my body.  Heck, I've even become a coach and am helping others by hosting Facebook Challenge Groups and offering guidance!  That has all been amazing and I love doing it.

Yet as I sit here, I gotta be honest, I've been feeling incredibly down...  I feel like all of a sudden I don't know what to do next for my weight loss journey.  I have enjoyed the 21 Day Fix program and drinking my Shakeology daily, but I want to do more.

These last few weeks have been a yo-yo when it comes to my weight loss.  I've been watching what I eat and exercising 7 days a week for the last 5 weeks for 30 minutes, but I've been noticing that the weight isn't easy to come off, I'm stuck.  I think that I'm in what everyone calls a "weight loss plateau".

What do I do now?  I'm stuck in the middle of my journey.  What does one do when you find that you aren't able to get to your goal?  The answer...??

Find another way...don't give up.

While I have enjoyed the 21 Day Fix program, I must say that it isn't working as well as I would have hoped.  I have lost some inches and the diet containers are amazing, but I think that since my body is in good physical condition I need to challenge it a bit more with some more intense cardio and weight training routines.  So this week, while I continue to finish out my last week of the 21 Day Fix program, I will be looking at purchasing another Beachbody program to see if it will help in my continuation of weight loss and losing inches.  I am trying to decide between Chalene's TURBOFIRE or INSANITY

Which one do you think I should try next?  COMMENT below on this post.

I am planning on placing my order tomorrow - so let me know your thoughts.

Thank you for your continued support!

STATurday: My Journey with Shakeology and the 21 Day Fix

Okay - hold the press!  This program is SERIOUS!  I am totally amazed at how much my body has already transformed after only 6 days.  It is all about the NUTRITION and the work outs that Autumn has you doing are intense but they only last 30 minutes.  She is so encouraging and motivating during the workouts - I love it.  This could be a new favorite program!

Here I am at Day 1 of the 21 Day Fix:
Weight:  153 pounds
Waist: 31.2
Hips: 36.2
Chest: 35
Right Arm:  11.7
Left Arm: 11.7
Right Thigh: 20.2
Left Thigh: 20.2
Body Fat:  25.72%
I am not able to take photos until Day 21 - but I have already sneaked a peak at the scale and I am currently at 151 pounds!  I have already LOST 2 pounds this week - which is AWESOME!

This program is all about nutrition - drinking your Shakeology, portion control with the containers, and getting your 30 minutes of workout in every day of the week.  It is a really easy program to follow actually and I am shocked that it is taken THIS long to get something like this on the market.  It is a dire need in todays society, as even as a COACH, I didn't realize how much fruit and veggies I was OVEREATING.

This program also doesn't make me feel hungry - I am eating super healthy foods and my body has a TON of energy.  You are eating 5 mini meals throughout the day, spaced over 2-3 hours.  Again, super easy to follow and I use the weekends to prep my lunches and portions out for the week.

I can't wait to see where I'm at by Day 14 and then Day 21!

If you're interested in learning more about the program - visit my coaching site and take a look for more details:  www.beachbodycoach.com/m4mckim or feel free to shoot me an e-mail and ask any questions you may have.  Also, I'd be happy to help you get a good discount on Shakeology AND the program, just send me an e-mail for more details: coachmelissamckim@gmail.com

Stay tuned for next STATurday's post!  Thank you ALL for your continued support!

RECIPE WEDNESDAY: Smoked Salmon Omelet

I really love smoked salmon locks on a bagel with cream cheese.  Whenever I am on vacation, that is the first thing I look for on the menu at breakfast.  However, since I've been CLEAN EATING, I have stayed clear of it because of the bagel and the high sodium content.

But - my life just got GREAT as I've found a recipe of putting my favorite breakfast on an omelet instead!  YIPPEE!  Check it out!!!

Recipe

Smoked Salmon Omelet

This recipe only makes one omelet because you really can’t make more than one at a time. If you are serving several for brunch, make them all beforehand. Warm the prepared omelets on a greased sheet pan in the oven, warming drawer or on a hot plate.

Times

  • Prep Time : 10 min
  • Cook Time : 10 min
  • Ready Time : 20 min

Servings

2 Servings

RECIPE WEDNESDAY: Eggplant Nuggets

I found another great recipe off from The Earth Diet that I will be adding to my list of eats soon!  These Eggplant Nuggets look delicious and the recipe can be found below.

Did you know that Eggplants are incredibly healthy for you?  According to my research, I have found some of the top benefits of this nightshade plant and what they can do for you and your health!  I am definitely putting Eggplant into my diet more often.
  • The iron, calcium and other minerals in eggplant supply the essential nutrients required by the body.
  • Eggplants contain certain essential phyto nutrients which improve blood circulation and nourish the brain. But remember—these nutrients are concentrated in the skin of the eggplant, so don’t char and throw it away.
  • They provide fiber, which protects the digestive tract. In fact, regular intake of eggplants can protect you from colon cancer.
  • Eggplant is low in calories, with just 35 per cup. It contains no fat and its high fiber content can help you feel full.
  • For centuries, eggplants have been used for controlling and managing diabetes. Modern research validates this role, thanks to the high fiber and low soluble carbohydrate content of the eggplant.
  • Eggplants have a role in heart care, too. Research studies show they can lower ‘bad’ cholesterol. But you must cook them the right way to get these benefits. Fried eggplant soaks up a lot of fat, making it harmful and heavy. Instead, bake it at 400 degrees, which brings out glorious flavor and gives you all the goodness an eggplant holds!
  • The heart-healthy benefits of eggplant don’t end with limiting cholesterol. Eggplants are high in bioflavonoids, which are known to control high blood pressure and relieve stress.
  • Regular consumption of eggplant helps prevent blood clots—thanks again to Vitamin K and bioflavonoids, which strengthen capillaries.

  • EGGPLANT NUGGETS RECIPE

    Serves 4

    Ingredients:
    3 large eggplants
    4 eggs
(vegans can use olive oil or coconut oil mixed with honey to make the nugget coating stick to the eggplant)
3 cups of Almonds (or use hemp seeds as an alternative)
    1/2 tablespoons of Turmeric
    3 tablespoons of Himalayan Salt
1 teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper (more if you want it spicy)
Extra virgin Coconut Oil for cooking

Action:1. Chop the egg plant into cubes for the nuggets.
    2. In a bowl whisk the eggs. Drop the eggplant cubes into the egg and let it soak.
    3. Mix the turmeric, almonds, cayenne pepper and himalayan salt in a blender until you have a smooth crumbly consistency.
    4. Place one eggplant cube at a time into the spice coating mix and cover well. Do this with all of them.
    5. In a fry pan heat the oil. When it is hot and sizzling add the eggplant nuggets to the pan and let it cook until the outside is a crunchy golden brown.
    6. Serve with TED chips, wedges, sweet potato fries or tomato sauce! Whatever else you would like to eat it with!

    SUGGESTION:
+ FOR MEAT EATERS: Use Chicken for Chicken Nuggets

This recipe is GLUTEN FREE, REFINED SUGAR FREE, DAIRY FREE, SOY FREE.

STATurday: My Journey with P90x3 and Shakeology

Today was an amazing day of yoga teacher training, so I am posting this up a little late - BUT - I have great news!  This STATurday, I am down another 1% in body fat, another 1 around the waist, and another 1 inch in the thighs - what a great start!

One thing I WILL say though is don't expect to lose a ton of weight the first few weeks of this program - as you are lifting weights and really getting your body ready for the next phase.  I can tell that even though I am getting toned up and losing inches, I did gain 1 pound this week, which I am sure is muscle, considering all of my other stats went down.  This is why it is SO IMPORTANT to NOT ONLY measure your success on the scale but in other ways as well - such as taking measurements and photos.  It is a motivator to KEEP going and also a great way to look back and see HOW FAR you've come.

Check out my new stats and photos!!!

BUT, you know what the BEST part of it is?!?!  I AM GETTING ABS!!  I can't believe I had those underneath all that... well... ya know...FAT!!!  I am so excited - this is all happening to me just in time for SWIMSUIT Season!  WAHOO!!!!

    So, back to the program...

I have really enjoyed my experience with P90x3 and drinking Shakeology over the course of these last 12 days and I look forward to seeing my 30 days results!  I am so thankful for all of the encouragement that I have received from my friends and family.

I am also leading a 60 Day Accountability Group & Nutrition Challenge and the ladies in that group are UNBELIEVABLE!  They truly inspire me to keep doing what I'm doing.  It is so great to know that you're not alone in the journey and learn something from everyone who is going through it all with you too!

If you're interested in being part of my 21 Day Fix Test Group starting April 14th - please let me know - send me an e-mail at coachmelissamckim@gmail.com and I'll be sure to send you more details.

I found a really great recipe off of "The Earth Diet" which falls beautifully into the Clean Eating lifestyle.  These are definitely going to be a staple in my home!  YUM!

    Makes 10 skewers

    1 pound  chicken breast (500g)
    3 garlic cloves
    5 tablespoons of honey
1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil
1 bunch of fresh rosemary (can use dried also)

Action:1. Chop The chicken into cubes. Dice the garlic. Pull the rosemary off the sticks and dice into small pieces
    2. In a bowl stir the honey, garlic, olive oil and rosemary together! Add the chicken and let it soak for 4 hours (you can also just cook it right away, but soaking will have the chicken soak the flavors more!)
    3. Put the chicken on skewers (You can use the rosemary sticks themselves!)
    4. Cook them in olive oil, coconut oil or grill them until ready! Mmm enjoy!
    5. Serve with potato wedges and salad!

Clean Eating - It's a Lifestyle with Great Benefits!

Clean eating has completely transformed my life and really the only thing you need to get to understand the lifestyle is to focus on only shopping the outside parameter of the grocery store!

When you start grocery shopping this way and living this way, you own your health. Your body will drop any excess weight, the goal becomes to be healthy, rather than focused on being thin. You nourish your body with nutrition everyday. Proper nutrition is the key.

One way to get nutrition everyday at an instant cellular level is to drink a pure fruit or vegetable juice.  If you don't have one yet, you should grab a Nutriblast!   I use mine every day and incorporate fresh spinach and berries into my Shakeology mix.  Shakeology already includes 70+ super foods my body needs to get through the day and I've already personally seen numerous changes from the way I look on the outside, to the way I feel on the inside.  My skin is clear ( no break-outs!) and my digestive system is working properly.  If you want more information, take a look at my website dedicated to everything Shakeology for further information.

The 2nd way is to eat more raw whole foods in their natural state. Eat less processed foods and cut out junk foods. The goal is to get nutrition at every meal and drink.

Cravings, addictions, disorders, diseases, viruses, cancer and other illnesses all get improved, if not entirely healed when we get high doses of nutrition. It's pure science and has been proven over and over again that proper nutrition creates a healthy body, and genetically engineered foods including chemicals and preservatives, can cause all types of health issues - that we rather not experience.

    Health is bliss.

Invest your money in taking care of you and your families. Purchase fresh produce from farmers markets, or grow your own, or support organic stores. Buy organic foods that give you energy and health. Invest in things that make you feel good - and whole!

With people living a natural and clean eating lifestyle, so many people achieve better health overall. Many lose excess weight, heal acne, psoriasis and other skin issues, treat depression, anxiety - the list goes on!

Living this way strengthens your  immune system and helps heal you from the inside out. Why? It is so so so simple, because of nutrition.

If you want to maintain your health and prevent it from hitting rock bottom with sickness or disease, then this lifestyle is for you!

I believe everyone should achieve great health. Nutrition is our access to achieving the kind of healthy bodies we all want.

Stay tuned for some clean eating recipes!  I will be posting yummy ideas I've tried (or will soon be trying!) on here every Wednesday!
